Barix Instreamer (Physical unit): Configure Stream Relaying

Once your Barix Instreamer firmware is up-to-date, you're ready to configure relaying to SHOUTcast Australia!

Note: Our examples are based on using a 128kbps package with SHOUTcast Australia. Higher plan? Amend or ask us.

There are some key areas under the Configuration menu that need attention for your relay to broadcast successfully.

Configuration > Advanced Settings > Network:

We've used Cloudflare DNS as example - you could use OpenDNS, Quad9, etc instead.

  • Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1
  • Alternative DNS: 1.0.0.1

These settings are very important - else Barix can't resolve your Server's Hostname!

Configuration > Advanced Settings > Audio:

  • Input Source: Line Stereo
  • Audio Format: MPEG1 / 44.1KHz (MP3)
  • MPEG Bitrate Mode: VBR or CBR (VBR = better)
    • VBR note: This must be within normal spec.
    • ie. No major deviations above assigned bit-rate.
  • MPEG Bitrate: 128kbps (or 192/256/320 depending on plan)
  • (VBR) MPEG Encoding Quality: 6 (so it averages just below plan's bitrate)
    • Note: If your audio feed "drops", try lowering this by 1 level at a time
    • "Drops" = Icecast kicking your source due to it being too far over-bitrate
  • A/D amplifier gain: -3dB (this will depend on your audio input - check both ends)
    • ie. Verify that your input/audio source isn't quiet. Is all content quiet? etc.
  • MP3 Bit Reservoir: Keep empty

Configuration > Advanced Settings > Streaming:

  • Streaming Mode: Send always
  • Buffer Underrun Mode (TCP): Skip
  • Stream Packet Strategy: Lowest Latency (best)
    • You can select Optimal Package if you'd like
  • UDP Tx Source Port: 0
  • Own Name: Your Station Name goes here...
  • Radio Path (mount-point): /stream
  • Icecast 2 Username: Enter your Username
    • Check your Welcome Email for User
  • Icy-url / SIP user: Leave blank for Icecast
    • SHOUTcast: Enter your Website's URL
  • Ice-genre: Enter your Genre (Icecast only)
    • SHOUTcast: Leave this Genre field blank
  • Shoutcast stream: Select from Public or Private
    • Public will publish your Station to YP etc
    • Private will withhold your Station from YP
  • Destination #1 > Connection type: Icecast Source
  • Destination #1 > IP or Domain: radio##.shoutcast.net.au
    • Check your Welcome Email for your correct Server #
  • Destination #1 > Port: Enter your Radio Station's port number
    • Check your Welcome Email for your Station's unique Port #

Configuration > Advanced Settings > Security:

  • Icecast/Shoutcast: Enter your Radio Station's password
    • Check your Welcome Email for your Radio Password
    • Once set, this will show "Set" in the right-hand column
  • Other settings: Irrelevant to ensuring successful relaying to us
