Licensing: How to register for, report on and pay Music Royalties

If you're just getting your Internet Radio Station started, it might seem confusing how to handle licensing.

APRA AMCOS and PPCA

Provided you make the right enquiries, you should be able to cover yourself quickly and easily.

To begin with, make contact with the below organisations for more information about how you may be impacted:

  1. https://www.apraamcos.com.au/
  2. https://www.ppca.com.au/

APRA AMCOS has cost-effective licensing available for Internet-only Radio Stations:

In particular, if your station generates less than $25k/year then you can use their Online Mini License and sign-up yourself online today.

With sign-up at https://portal.apra.com.au/minilicence/Licence.action

"This licence covers online services earning less than AUD$25,000 a year for each online activity.

If you use copyright music in your download service, streaming service, or podcast, you need a licence for those works. By ‘use’ we mean anything from copying music from one device to another, to providing music for customers to stream or download, and more.

The Online Mini Licence covers you for:

  • On-demand streaming (individual tracks or streaming services)
  • On-demand digital downloads
  • Webcasting
  • Podcasts
  • Entertainment/audiovisual streaming services
  • Backing tracks
  • Karaoke streaming and download services"

Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA)

You may be able to leverage an industry agreement between PPCA and the CBAA if your station qualifies. Please contact the CBAA for more information.

International Standard Recording Code

You may be able to leverage the ISRC for each track you play, depending on your software set-up. Media Control Panel allows this to be reported on, though it must be embedded in the ID3 tags of your streamed music for that to work. We can't guarantee it, though can help to diagnose it.

Otherwise you can leverage local software options to accomplish this in other ways. Using the ISRC makes it easier for you to know exactly what should be owed for each track.
